Session 3: Climate Change and Mitigation

On September 22, the PEN@Hydropower x EERA JP Hydropower Knowledge Symposium on Hydropower Research Gaps continues with a focus on one of the most pressing issues of our time: climate change and mitigation.

Hydropower sits at the crossroads of climate impacts and solutions. On the one hand, changing hydrological regimes, droughts, and extreme weather events are challenging the reliability of hydropower. On the other hand, hydropower is uniquely positioned to contribute to climate mitigation through renewable generation, flexibility, and storage.

Session 3: Climate Change and Mitigation will explore how research can help bridge knowledge gaps and equip the sector to meet these challenges.

Why this session matters

As climate change accelerates, hydropower research must address two fundamental questions:

  • Adaptation: How can hydropower systems remain resilient in the face of more frequent and severe droughts, floods, and changing flow regimes?

  • Mitigation: How can hydropower reduce its own greenhouse gas emissions and contribute effectively to decarbonisation?

The session will highlight innovative tools, new datasets, and integrative approaches that push the boundaries of current research and practice.
