Day 3 Recap: Digitalisation, Collaboration, and the Future of Hydropower

The final day of our international hydropower workshop series closed on a high note, spotlighting digital innovation and collaborative progress across the COST Action network. With a clear focus on the role of emerging technologies and cross-project synergies, Day 3 brought the conversation full circle—from technical advancements to strategic coordination.

Unlocking the Digital Potential of Hydropower

In the Round Table on Digitalization in EU-Funded Projects (WG2), experts from six leading initiatives—H-HOPE, Store2Hydro, XFLEX HYDRO, ReHydro, HydroFlex, and STOR-HY—shared real-world applications of digital tools in hydropower systems.

Speakers Eduard Doujak, Elena Vagnoni, Zoran Markov, and Alexandre Presas highlighted how digitalization is improving monitoring, enabling automation, and enhancing predictive control capabilities. Their experiences shed light on the tangible benefits of integrating smart technologies—such as improved flexibility and resilience—while also addressing common implementation challenges. From lessons learned to visions for the future, the session underscored digital transformation as a driving force for sustainable, efficient hydropower.

Strengthening Our Network: WG and Task Leader Presentations

The final session of the day brought all Working Group and Task Leaders together for a comprehensive presentation of ongoing and upcoming activities. Since the last Management Committee meeting, the COST Action has seen significant momentum, with new collaborations, pilot initiatives, and research directions emerging across the network.

The session served as both a reflection on what has been accomplished and a call to action for deeper engagement. By showcasing the diverse areas of focus—from socio-political aspects to technology deployment—it reinforced the strength and interdisciplinarity of our community.

A Three-Day Journey of Insight and Collaboration

Over the course of three days, our workshop series facilitated critical conversations on the future of hydropower—from its role in flexible energy systems and climate resilience to the importance of education, equity, and digital innovation. With over 30 countries represented, the event brought together a unique mix of perspectives and expertise that will continue to shape our shared goals in the energy transition.

Thank you to all participants, speakers, and partners who made this workshop a success. Your contributions have laid the foundation for continued cooperation, research, and innovation.

Stay tuned for the outcomes and next steps as we translate this momentum into action!
